Personalised Name Gifts: 3D Printed Signs, Lamps and Keychains

A gift with someone's name on it says "I made this for you, not for anyone". The catch is that shop-bought personalised items are limited to whatever font and colour the shop stocks. With 3D printing, the name is part of the model itself, so the font, the size, the colour and the object it sits on are all yours to decide. Here is what a studio can make and what to send so it comes out right the first time.

The five most ordered name gifts

1. A desk name sign. A standing plaque with the name in raised letters, 15 to 30 cm wide. Two-colour printing puts the letters in one colour and the base in another with no painting.
2. A name lamp. The name is printed as a hollow silhouette or as a lithophane panel (a thin sheet that shows an image when lit from behind), and a warm LED glows through it. Popular for children's rooms.
3. A keychain. A name tag, a name in a heart or a circle, or a name on the back of a small figurine. Cheap enough to order several.
4. A door plaque. For a kid's bedroom, a home office or a dacha gate, with a hole or an adhesive pad for mounting.
5. A cake topper. The name and a number or a phrase on a thin stem, in gold or silk filament so it catches the light in photos.

Fonts, letters and the small details that matter

Names are text, and text on a 3D print has rules.

• Letter height. Raised letters should be at least 5 mm tall on an FDM print (the common process where a printer lays down melted plastic in layers) to stay crisp. Resin printing handles smaller text, down to about 2 mm.
• Font choice. Bold, rounded fonts print cleanly. Thin serifs and script fonts with hair-line connectors can break. If the person has a favourite font, tell us; if not, we will suggest one that suits the object.
• Cyrillic, Latin and Kazakh letters. All fine. Letters with descenders (ц, щ, д, у) and the Kazakh characters (ә, ғ, қ, ң, ө, ұ, ү, һ, і) need a little extra height so the tails do not get lost, and we account for that.
• Spelling. Send the name typed, not handwritten, and double-check it. A printed sign cannot be edited afterwards.
