Photo gifts that glow

A lithophane is a thin printed panel with varying thickness. Hold it to a window or put a light behind it and the photo appears in soft greyscale, with a depth that a printed picture never has. Turn the light off and it looks like a plain white plate, which is part of the charm.

FDM is the everyday process where a printer lays down melted plastic in layers; resin printing cures a liquid photopolymer with UV light and gives finer detail. PLA is the plant-based plastic most decorative prints use. Red silk filament has a satin shine that photographs beautifully, and a translucent red gives a stained-glass effect when lit.

• Three weeks before: painted figurines, moon lamps with custom inserts, anything requiring modelling from a photo.
• Two weeks before: lithophane panels and night lights, ring boxes with a finish.
