12 Gift Ideas for Lord of the Rings Fans (That Aren't Another Mug)

If the terms are new: FDM is the common process where a printer lays down melted plastic line by line, and PLA is the standard plant-based plastic that most decorative items are printed in.

Three things to decide before you order

• Size. A figurine at 10 cm and the same figurine at 25 cm are different gifts and different prices. Ask for a photo next to a hand or a coffee cup if you are unsure.
• Finish. Raw print, single colour, or painted. Painted pieces take longer and cost more, but for a Balrog it is worth it.
• Rights. Fan-made models of licensed characters are a grey area. Fantasy Lab 3D prints from files you own or from designs licensed for personal use; our post on ordering prints of copyrighted characters explains the honest position.

Timing matters too. A keychain is a day or two of work, while a painted figurine or a full chess set can take a couple of weeks, and that is before delivery. Ordering three or four weeks ahead of the birthday is the safe margin. The price depends on size, material and finish, so the quickest route is to ask for a quote on the two or three ideas you like most.
