A 3D Printed Lord of the Rings Chess Set: 32 Pieces, One Epic Board

A chess set is the one place where the Fellowship and the forces of Mordor can meet on equal terms, sixteen pieces a side. We have printed a full Lord of the Rings set at Fantasy Lab 3D, and this post covers how the characters map to the pieces, how the figures are made, and what you can decide about size, material and finish when ordering one.

Who plays what

The fun of a themed set starts with the casting. There is no single canon, but the mapping below is the one most players find intuitive, and it is close to what we printed.

Some sets swap Frodo in as a king with Sam as queen, or put the Balrog on the dark side as a queen. All of that is negotiable when you order: if you have a strong opinion about who deserves the queen's square, tell us.

How the pieces are made

The pieces are printed one of two ways, and the choice affects how the set looks and feels.

• FDM printing lays down melted plastic in layers. It is the right choice for the rooks (towers are simple, strong shapes) and for larger, chunkier pieces. Marble filament makes towers look carved from stone.
• Resin printing cures liquid photopolymer with light and captures fine detail: Gandalf's beard, the feathers on a Rohirrim helmet, the chain mail on an Uruk-hai. Character pieces are usually resin.

Many sets mix the two: a marble FDM board and rooks, resin figures for everything else. The differences are explained in our FDM vs resin post.

Size matters more than you think

Chess pieces need to be readable at arm's length and stable on the board. Standard tournament kings are around 9.5 cm tall with a base about 40 percent of that. Themed sets tend to go a little larger because a 9 cm Sauron with a mace looks better than a 6 cm one. We usually recommend:

• King height 9 to 11 cm
• Pawn height 4.5 to 5.5 cm
• Board squares 5 to 5.5 cm

Weighted bases make a big difference. A hollow printed base feels toy-like; a base with a steel washer or a small weight glued inside feels like a proper chess piece. We add weights on request.

Finishing options

A themed set can be delivered three ways.

1. Two-tone raw print. Light side in marble, white or ivory filament; dark side in black or dark grey. The cheapest option and already very presentable, and the marble stone effect works especially well for towers and bases.
2. Primed and washed. A grey or black primer with a dark wash that settles into the recesses, so every detail reads even from across the room, with no bright colours.
3. Fully painted. Each character hand-painted: Gandalf's grey robes, the gold of Galadriel, the red eye on Sauron's helm. This takes many hours and is priced accordingly.

The board

A board can be printed as tiles that join with connectors, in two contrasting filaments, or as a marble-and-black checkerboard. Some customers add a border with the Ring inscription or a map of Middle-earth engraved around the edge. A printed board is lighter than wood and can be sized exactly to the pieces, though a wooden board with printed pieces is equally valid if you already own one.

A gift, a display piece, or both

Most sets we make are gifts, and many never see a serious game: they live on a shelf as a display piece next to the books. That is a legitimate use.
