Custom Photo Lithophanes: Turn Any Picture into a Glowing Keepsake

A printed photo goes in a frame. A photo lithophane goes in a frame, a lamp, a night light or a keychain, and it only shows the picture when light passes through it. The rest of the time it is a quiet white relief. This guide covers how it works, which photos turn out best, the shapes you can order and how to send your picture.

How a photo becomes plastic

A lithophane encodes brightness as thickness. Software takes your photo, converts it to grey scale and turns every pixel into a height: dark pixels become thick plastic, bright pixels become thin plastic. The printer builds that relief in white filament, usually between 0.6 mm and 3 mm thick. Light from behind passes easily through thin areas and struggles through thick ones, so the image appears in soft grey tones, a little like an old photographic plate. The physics are the same as in our 3D printed moon lamps, just with your photo instead of the lunar surface.

Which photos work best

Not every picture makes a good lithophane. The technique is monochrome and relies on contrast, so choose accordingly:

• Faces and portraits with clear lighting are ideal. Wedding photos, newborn portraits and grandparents are the most common orders.
• Good contrast beats high resolution. A sharp phone photo is enough; a blurry scan of a scan is not.
• Simple backgrounds help. Busy backgrounds turn into noise around the subject.
• Avoid strong backlighting or heavy shadows across the face.
• Colour does not survive. A red dress and a green dress become similar greys, so pick photos where the story is in the shapes, not the colours.

Flat panels around 10 by 13 cm are the sweet spot for a single portrait: large enough for detail, small enough to sit on a shelf. Larger panels are possible and take longer to print.

Colour lithophanes

A newer option prints the lithophane in several thin colour layers so the picture appears in colour when lit. It is more complex, needs a multi-colour printer and a carefully calibrated light, and the result is softer than a regular photo. For most gifts the classic white lithophane is the better choice; ask if you want the colour version and we will explain the trade-offs.

Adding words and dates

Text can be added to the frame or the base: a name, a date, a short phrase. Keep it short, because engraved text in plastic reads best at a few millimetres tall. A panel with "Grandma, 1948 to 2024" on the stand is a common memorial request; a heart-shaped panel with a wedding date is a common anniversary one. 1. Pick the highest-quality version you have, not a screenshot of a messenger preview.
2. Do not crop it tightly; we will crop to the panel shape and keep some margin.
3. Tell us the format, the size and whether you want a lit stand.
