Multi-Colour 3D Printing: How Modern Printers Swap Filaments Mid-Print

A few years ago a 3D print was one colour, and anything else meant paint. Today a printer with a multi-material unit can switch between several filaments hundreds of times during a single job and hand you a finished object with a red logo on a black base or a cat with a white belly and pink nose. Here is how it works, what it is good at and when we still reach for a brush.

How the filament swap works

A multi-material system, often called an AMS after one popular brand's name for it, is a box that holds four or more spools next to the printer. When the slicer reaches a point in a layer where the colour changes, the printer:

  1. Pulls the current filament back out of the hot end
  2. Feeds in the next spool's filament
  3. Purges a small amount of plastic to flush the old colour out of the nozzle
  4. Continues printing the layer in the new colour

Each swap takes tens of seconds. On a simple two-colour print with a change every layer, that is manageable. On a detailed four-colour figurine with changes in every layer, swaps can add up to more time than the printing itself.

The purge tower and why waste matters

The purged plastic has to go somewhere. Most printers build a "purge tower" beside the model, a block of striped scrap that grows with the part, or they use the purge to print the model's infill. Either way, multi-colour printing uses noticeably more filament than single-colour, and the waste rises with the number of swaps. A good slicer setup can cut waste by grouping colour changes and purging into infill, and a studio will do that by default.

The common thread is defined colour regions. Where each part of the model is clearly one colour and the boundaries are sharp, the printer delivers a result paint cannot match for consistency, especially across a batch of 50 identical items like custom keychains.

Where painting still wins

Multi-colour printing cannot do gradients, shading or blending. A filament is one colour, so a face printed with a "skin" filament has no shadows, a dragon has no darker scales towards the belly, and metallic weathering is impossible. Colour changes are also only as precise as the nozzle, so a 0.4 mm line is the smallest detail you can render. Realistic figurines, miniatures and props are still primed and painted by hand; the technique is described in post-processing 101.

The two approaches also combine well. A book nook can be printed with stone-grey walls and brown wooden beams straight off the printer, then receive hand-painted moss, rust and lantern glow on top.

Practical details customers ask about

  • Number of colours: four in one print is standard; more is possible with additional units, at more time and waste.
  • Which materials: same-family filaments mix best (PLA with PLA). Mixing PLA with PETG works for some combinations but not all; TPU flexible filament is difficult to swap.
  • Special filaments: marble, silk and glow filaments can be one of the colours, so a marble base with a black inscription is possible. See marble filament.
  • Time: expect a multi-colour job to take one and a half to three times as long as the same model in one colour, depending on how many swaps per layer.
  • Price: material waste and time both raise it. The price depends on the model, the number of colours and the finish, so ask for a quote with the design attached.
  • Seams: where colours meet on a vertical face, there may be very slight bleeding of one colour into another for the first millimetre after a swap. Good purge settings make this invisible on most parts.

Choosing colours that actually look good

Contrast is your friend: dark on light or light on dark reads clearly from across a room. Two similar mid-tones tend to blur. Matte filaments hide layer lines better than glossy ones and make colour boundaries look cleaner.
