If you have ever received a quote that mentioned "supports" and wondered why a printer needs help printing your model, this is the explanation. Supports are temporary scaffolding, and understanding them tells you a lot about why some prints cost more, take longer or have a slightly rougher side.

The problem: plastic cannot hang in the air

A 3D printer builds from the bottom up, one layer at a time, and every layer needs something underneath it. A vertical wall is easy: each layer sits on the one before. A gentle slope is also fine, because each layer is mostly supported by the previous one. But an outstretched arm, the underside of a chin, a balcony on a book nook or the bridge of a helmet's visor has nothing below it. Without help, the printer would extrude plastic into empty air and it would droop, sag or fall.

Supports solve this. The slicer software adds thin, sacrificial columns or lattices under any overhang so each layer has a base, and those structures are removed after printing.

The 45 degree rule

Most FDM printers can handle overhangs of up to about 45 degrees from vertical without support, because at that angle enough of each layer rests on the one below. Steeper than that and quality drops fast; past about 60 degrees, support is needed. Short horizontal spans (a few tens of millimetres) can be "bridged", where the printer stretches a strand across a gap and the next layers build on it.

Resin printers follow similar logic but need supports even more often, because each layer is peeled off a film and unsupported areas can tear. Resin supports are thin, numerous and taper to a tiny tip that leaves a small nub.

What supports cost you

Supports are not free, and they affect three things a customer cares about.

  • Time: supports are printed like any other material, so they add minutes or hours, and removing and cleaning them adds hands-on work.
  • Material: every gram of support is plastic that ends up in the bin. On a figurine with many overhangs, supports can weigh as much as the model.
  • Surface: where a support touches the model, it leaves a rougher patch that needs sanding. That is why the "best" side of a print is placed facing up and supports go on the back or underside.

How a studio minimises supports

Reducing supports is a craft in itself, and it is one of the things you are paying a studio for.

  1. Orientation. Rotating a model can turn a supported overhang into a self-supporting slope. A figure leaning forward may print better on its back; a helmet prints best upside down.
  2. Splitting. Cutting a model into parts so each part has a flat base and few overhangs, then gluing. A dragon becomes body, wings and tail.
  3. Tree supports. Modern slicers grow branching, tree-like supports that touch the model in fewer places and pull off more cleanly than old-style block supports.
  4. Design changes. Chamfers instead of flat overhangs, teardrop-shaped holes instead of round ones, small tabs added where a support would otherwise scar a visible face. Our post on designing for 3D printing covers these.
  5. Material choice. PLA bridges and overhangs better than PETG; a tough resin tolerates fewer supports than a brittle one.

Book nooks, for example, are designed as a set of walls and floors that each print flat, so a piece full of balconies and arches ends up needing almost no support at all.

Removing supports without damage

After printing, supports are snapped off by hand, cut with flush cutters or, for resin, clipped before the final cure while the material is still slightly soft. Contact points are then sanded or scraped. On painted work, the marks disappear completely under primer; on raw prints, a faint patch may remain on the supported side. If a specific face of your model must be perfect, tell the studio and it will be oriented upward and kept support-free. Finishing steps are described in post-processing 101.

Do you need to think about any of this?
