Resin Printing After the Print: Washing, Curing and Safety

A resin printer produces astonishing detail, but the part that comes off the build plate is not finished. It is wet, tacky and not yet fully hardened. The washing and curing that follow are what turn it into a safe, solid object, and they are the reason a resin order takes longer than the print time alone suggests. Here is the whole process, so you know what you are getting and why it matters.

What resin printing actually does

Resin (SLA or MSLA) printers hold a vat of liquid photopolymer, a resin that hardens when exposed to ultraviolet light. A screen or laser flashes the shape of each layer, usually 0.025 to 0.05 mm thick, and the part is pulled up out of the vat layer by layer. Because each layer is defined by light rather than by a nozzle, the detail is far finer than FDM plastic printing, which is why it is the go-to for miniatures, jewellery masters and figurine faces. The important word is "photopolymer". Fresh off the printer, the part is only partially cured. Its surface is coated in liquid resin, and its interior is not at full strength.

Step 1: washing

The first job is removing uncured resin from the surface and from every crevice.

  • The part is submerged and agitated in isopropyl alcohol (IPA), usually in two baths: a dirty first wash and a clean second wash
  • Water-washable resins use plain water instead, which is gentler but still produces contaminated water that cannot go down the drain
  • Hollow parts and deep recesses are flushed with a syringe or brush so no liquid resin is trapped inside
  • The part is then dried completely, often with compressed air, because alcohol left in pores causes white marks

A poorly washed part looks slightly glossy, feels sticky and will stay tacky after curing. This is the most common flaw in cheap resin prints.

Step 2: support removal

Resin supports are removed after washing, and ideally before final curing, while the material is still slightly soft. Snipped with flush cutters at the tip, they leave a tiny nub that is sanded or scraped away. Removing supports after full cure risks chipping the surface, especially with brittle standard resins.

Step 3: UV curing

Curing finishes the chemistry. The part is exposed to UV light, typically at 405 nm, in a curing station with a rotating table so every side gets even exposure. Small miniatures cure in a few minutes; thick parts take longer and may be cured in stages. Sunlight works too, but unevenly.

Over-curing is also possible: too much UV makes some resins brittle or yellow. A studio times the cure to the resin and part thickness.

Why safety matters

Uncured resin is a skin and respiratory irritant. Repeated contact can cause sensitisation, meaning the reaction gets worse over time. This is why the process in a studio involves nitrile gloves, ventilation and contained washing, and why uncured resin, dirty alcohol and paper towels are treated as chemical waste: dirty IPA is left in sunlight until the dissolved resin hardens and can be filtered out, and only then disposed of.

For you as a customer, this means two things. A properly cured part is inert and safe to handle, display and give as a gift. And a part that arrives sticky or smells strongly has been rushed, and you should send it back. What a finished resin part should feel like

A correctly processed resin print is smooth, hard, matte or satin, and dry. Fine detail is crisp with no blobs in recesses. The support side has small sanded dots rather than lumps. Standard resins are somewhat brittle, so thin parts like sword blades and spear tips should be handled with care; tough or ABS-like resins bend a little before breaking and are a better choice for anything that will be handled.
