A dishwasher rack clip, a blender lid latch, a bracket for a shelf the shop stopped selling years ago: tiny plastic parts that fail and take a working product with them. Instead of replacing the whole thing, you can have the broken piece measured, modelled and 3D printed. This guide walks through what can be reproduced, what you need to send, and how to get a part that fits the first time.

Why replacement parts are a perfect job for 3D printing

Manufacturers stop stocking spares long before products stop working. Once the original mould is scrapped, nobody will ever mass-produce that part again, because a run of ten pieces is not worth tooling for. 3D printing has no such threshold. One part is a normal order, and the file can be reprinted at any time if the part fails again. What can and cannot be reproduced

Good candidates:

  • Knobs, dials, handles and caps
  • Clips, latches, hinges and hooks
  • Brackets, mounts, feet and spacers
  • Gears and pulleys for low-load mechanisms (toys, blinds, small appliances)
  • Covers, battery doors, lens hoods, trim pieces
  • Drawer runners, shelf pins, furniture connectors
  • Housings for remote controls, sensors and tools

Poor candidates, or ones that need a conversation first:

  • Parts that sit above roughly 80 to 100 °C (inside ovens, near engine blocks) unless a high-temperature material is used
  • Parts under heavy, continuous mechanical load, such as car suspension components
  • Pressure-bearing and food-contact parts with strict certification requirements
  • Transparent optical parts such as lenses

Everything in the first list has been printed successfully many times. For the second list, be honest with the studio about where the part lives and what it does; sometimes a material upgrade solves it, sometimes it is safer to say no.

For most household repairs PETG is the safe default. For anything that snaps or flexes repeatedly, a slightly thicker design in PETG or TPU outlasts the original. Our post on PLA vs PETG vs ABS explains the differences in more depth.

What to send the studio

You do not need a 3D model. Fantasy Lab 3D can model a replacement from scratch, but the quality of the result depends on what you provide.

If you still have the broken part (even in pieces), that is ideal. Photograph it from several angles next to a ruler, then measure the key dimensions with a caliper if you have one: overall length, width, height, hole diameters and spacing, and anything that has to mate with another component. Better still, post or bring the part so it can be measured directly.

If the part is lost, photograph the place it came from. Measure the socket, holes or slot it fitted into, and describe the job it did (held a door, clicked into a rail, turned a shaft). If the part is complex, with curves that are hard to measure, 3D scanning can capture the shape and the model is then cleaned up in CAD. See from 3D scan to 3D print.

How the studio process works

  1. Review. You send photos and measurements; the studio confirms the part is printable and suggests a material.
  2. Modelling. A CAD model is built, often with small improvements: a thicker wall where the original snapped, a fillet on a sharp corner, a slightly deeper snap fit.
  3. Test fit. For parts that have to mate precisely, a quick draft version is printed first and checked against the socket or the mating part. FDM tolerances are typically around ±0.2 mm, so a test fit removes guesswork.
  4. Final print. The confirmed version is printed in the chosen material, supports are removed, holes are cleaned up.
  5. Spares. Since the file now exists, ordering two or three extra copies at the same time is cheap insurance.

What it costs and how long it takes

Small parts usually print in under an hour; modelling from measurements is where the time goes and depends on the complexity of the shape. A simple knob is a quick job; a hinge with three interlocking pieces takes longer. The price depends on the modelling effort, the size and the material, so send your photos and request a quote rather than guessing.
