3D Printed Car Accessories: Cup Holders, Mounts and Badges

Every car has a few small annoyances: a cup holder that is too wide, a phone that slides around, a broken trim clip nobody sells any more. 3D printing solves exactly these problems, because a part can be made for your specific model and year instead of "universal fit". Here is what people order, and what a car part has to survive.

Popular accessories people actually order

• Cup holder inserts and adapters. A sleeve that narrows a huge holder for a small bottle, or a dual holder that fits into a single slot.
• Phone and tablet mounts. Dash and vent mounts that clamp to the exact shape of your vent slats, or a bracket that bolts to an existing screw point.
• Centre console organisers. Trays with cut-outs for coins, cards, sunglasses and a charging cable.
• Trim clips and interior brackets. Small plastic parts that snap off after ten years and are sold only in packs of fifty, if at all.
• Badges and emblems. Custom lettering for a project car, a replacement for a faded emblem, a club logo for the grille.
• Key fob covers and keychains. Printed in flexible TPU or rigid PETG with your plate number or initials.
• Glove box and door pocket dividers. Simple, and surprisingly popular.

The one rule: heat

A car interior in an Almaty summer can pass 70 °C behind the windscreen. Standard PLA, the most common printing plastic, softens at around 60 °C, so a PLA phone mount on the dashboard will slowly droop. This is the single most important thing to get right.

ASA is our recommendation for anything that lives in the sun. It also resists UV, so it does not go yellow or chalky the way ABS can. More on that in can 3D prints live outdoors?. Fantasy Lab 3D will suggest the material once we know where in the car the part goes.

How a custom part is made to fit

For an insert or mount the fit is everything, so measurements matter more than looks. Three things help enormously:

1. Photos with a ruler in frame, from above and from the side.
2. Key dimensions with a caliper: inner diameter of the holder, slat spacing on the vent, thread size of an existing bolt.
3. The broken part itself, if there is one. It can be sent to us or photographed on graph paper.

From that we model the part, check it against the numbers, and send a preview. If the fit is critical, we can print a quick test piece first in cheap material, then the final part. Our guide on how to measure for a custom part walks through it step by step.

Badges, lettering and finishing

Emblems are where post-processing shines. A badge printed in ASA can be sanded smooth, primed and painted with automotive paint, then clear-coated so it matches the rest of the car. Chrome-style finishes are possible with metallic paint or a chrome film. For fine lettering we often use resin printing, which holds crisp edges better than filament, then paint it.

Mounting is usually double-sided automotive tape (3M VHB or similar) on a flat back, or printed pins that fit the original emblem holes.

What it costs and how long it takes

A cup holder insert or a trim clip is a small print, usually done the same or next day. A painted grille badge or a multi-part console organiser takes longer because of drying time between coats. The price depends on size, material and finish, so send photos and we will give you a quote.
