3D Printed Camera Gear: Lens Caps, Rigs and Phone Adapters
Replacement lens caps, hot-shoe mounts, phone-to-tripod adapters and telescope brackets: what 3D printing does well for photographers and how to order.

Photographers lose lens caps, run out of hot-shoe slots, and own at least one adapter that does not quite exist. 3D printing fills those gaps with parts that fit your exact camera, lens or phone, often for less effort than tracking down a discontinued original. Here is what prints well for camera and photo gear, what to avoid, and how to order a part that fits first time.
Small parts that go missing
The most common request is the boring one: a replacement for a part that fell off.
- Lens caps and rear caps for any filter thread or mount, including odd vintage sizes that nobody sells any more.
- Body caps for mirrorless and DSLR mounts, and dust caps for lens adapters.
- Hot-shoe covers, battery door latches, eyecups, hand-strap lugs.
- Filter cases, step-ring holders and SD card boxes that keep small things in one place.
- Lens hoods in a custom depth when the manufacturer's is too shallow or too expensive.
Caps are printed to the thread diameter and pitch of your lens, so they screw or clip on properly. If you have the broken original, send a photo and a couple of measurements; if you do not, the lens model name is usually enough. Mounts, brackets and rig pieces
Video shooters and hybrid photographers assemble rigs from cages, arms and plates, and printed parts slot into that ecosystem well.

For anything that carries load, the 1/4"-20 thread is not printed in plastic. A brass or steel threaded insert is heat-set into the printed part, which gives the strength of a metal thread and a plastic body that can be any shape. Read how strong are 3D printed parts before hanging a heavy lens off a printed arm: light accessories are fine, a two-kilogram cine lens is not.
Phone adapters and mobile filmmaking
Phones are the most-used camera in the world and the one with the fewest mounting points. Printed adapters solve that:
- Phone-to-tripod clamps sized to your phone, with or without the case on.
- Phone-to-telescope and phone-to-microscope adapters that line the lens up with an eyepiece for astrophotography or lab photos.
- Phone-to-binocular adapters for birding.
- Cold-shoe brackets that add a small microphone or LED to a phone rig.
- Filter holders that let a phone use a standard 52 mm or 58 mm photographic filter.

Studio and lighting helpers
- Gobos and snoots for speedlights: shapes that cut light into a window, a slit or a pattern.
- Diffuser frames and bounce card holders for on-camera flash.
- Backdrop clips, clamp adapters and light-stand feet.
- Product photography turntables and small stands that hold jewellery or watches at an angle.
- Custom 3D printed props: a name plate, a miniature set, a display base. This is where a printing studio and a photographer overlap nicely.
What to keep in mind
A few honest limitations:
- Heat: PLA softens around 60 °C, so a black PLA part left on a dashboard in summer will deform. For anything living in a hot car or under studio lights, PETG or ASA is the right call.
- Optics: printed parts should never touch glass. Caps and hoods are designed with clearance so the plastic only contacts the metal barrel.
- Precision threads: a printed cap clips or screws with a comfortable fit, but a printed filter thread is a compromise. Use a printed step-ring holder, and keep the metal filter thread.
