Custom Cookie Cutters and Baking Tools from 3D Print

A cookie shaped like your company logo, your dog, or the exact outline of a birthday kid's favourite dinosaur is one of the easiest ways to make baking feel personal. 3D printing turns any outline into a working cutter in a day. Here is what can be made, what it should be made from and how to get a set that actually works in dough.

What a 3D printed cookie cutter can be

A cookie cutter is a simple object: a thin wall that cuts, and a wider flange on top that you press on. Because a 3D printer builds it layer by layer from a digital file, the outline can be anything you can draw.

• Logos and lettering. Cafés, bakeries and small brands order cutters that match their branding for events and gift boxes.
• Portraits and pets. A photo of a cat traced into a silhouette becomes a cutter in one evening of modelling.
• Holiday sets. Snowflakes, Nauryz ornaments, hearts for 14 February, pumpkins for autumn.
• Wedding and baby shower shapes. Initials, dates, tiny prams and rings.
• Fandom shapes. Game controllers, spaceships, the silhouette of a favourite character.

Beyond cutters, the same process makes embossing stamps that press a pattern or text into the dough, fondant moulds, cake stencils, a rolling pin with a carved pattern, and dough guides that keep every biscuit the same thickness.

Cutter, stamp or two-part set?

The best design depends on how detailed you want the result to be.

For anything with small letters, a two-part set (cutter plus stamp) is usually the cleanest. Trying to cut and stamp fine text in one motion tends to tear soft dough.

Which plastic is safe for food?

The usual filament for cutters is PLA, a plastic made from plant starch. It is rigid, prints sharp edges and holds a thin cutting wall. The honest caveat is that a printed surface has tiny grooves between layers where crumbs can sit, so the cutter should be washed by hand in warm water, not in a dishwasher, and dried well. PLA also softens at around 60 °C, so it never goes near an oven or hot dough.

Design details that make a cutter work

A cutter that looks right on screen can still fail in dough. A few things we build into every design:

• Cutting edge around 0,8 to 1 mm thick. Thinner tears; thicker crushes the dough instead of slicing it.
• Flange width of 4 to 6 mm on top so fingers have something to push.
• Height of 12 to 18 mm so the cutter clears standard dough thickness with room to spare.
• No inner details narrower than about 2 mm, otherwise the dough will not release.
• Slight draft on the walls, which helps the cookie drop out cleanly.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

A single cutter prints in under an hour. A full holiday set of ten shapes is typically ready within a day or two, including the modelling. The price depends on the size, the number of shapes, the material and whether you need a stamp as well, so send the outline and we will give you a quote.
