Is PLA Food Safe? What You Should Know Before Printing a Cookie Cutter
Is PLA food safe? The honest answer for cookie cutters, cake toppers and kitchen tools: what the plastic is, where the real risks hide and how to use prints.

Cookie cutters, cake toppers, chocolate moulds and herb labels are some of the most requested prints at Fantasy Lab 3D, and the same question comes with almost every order: is PLA safe to use with food? The short answer is "yes, for the right jobs, with a few rules". The longer answer is worth five minutes, because the risks are not where most people expect them.
What PLA actually is
PLA (polylactic acid) is a plastic made from fermented plant starch, usually corn or sugar cane. The raw polymer is widely used in food packaging, compostable cups and even medical implants, and several grades are recognised as safe for food contact by regulators. That is the good news, and it is why PLA has a reputation as "the food-safe filament".
The catch is that a spool of filament is not pure PLA. It contains pigments, plasticisers and sometimes additives for gloss or matte effect, and those are rarely certified for food contact unless the manufacturer says so explicitly. So the material is a good start, but the specific spool matters.
The four real risks
When people worry about printed kitchen items, they usually worry about the plastic itself. In practice, the concerns are these:
- Layer grooves. An FDM print is made of stacked layers, and the tiny valleys between them trap crumbs, fat and moisture. Bacteria can grow there and a sponge cannot reach them. This is the biggest issue, not chemistry.
- Additives and pigments. Unless the filament is sold as food-contact certified, colourants are an unknown.
- The nozzle. Standard brass nozzles contain a small amount of lead. Studios that print food items regularly use stainless steel or hardened nozzles for those jobs.
- Heat. PLA softens around 55 to 60 °C. A dishwasher, hot liquids or a warm oven will deform it, which also cracks any coating you applied.
None of these make PLA dangerous for a cookie cutter. All of them matter for a bowl you eat from every day.
Short contact is the key distinction
Food-safety guidance draws a line between short, dry, cold contact and long, wet or hot contact. Printed items sit comfortably on one side of that line.

- Filament chosen from natural or food-contact-declared PLA or PETG, in a limited colour range
- Clean, dedicated nozzle, not one that has just printed a random colour
- Smooth, thicker cutting edges and solid top surfaces where dough touches, so there are fewer grooves to clean
- Design with open geometry and no hidden cavities where water could pool
- Optional food-safe coating on the contact surface for items like toppers that will sit on icing

How to use and clean printed kitchen items
A few habits keep printed kitchen tools hygienic and long-lived:
- Wash by hand in warm (not hot) water with dish soap immediately after use, using a soft brush for the detail.
- Dry completely before storing; do not leave a cutter sitting in a wet sink.
- Never put PLA in the dishwasher or near the oven. See our guide to caring for 3D printed items.
- Treat cutters like wooden utensils: replace them when the surface becomes scratched or stained.
- Use printed moulds as masters. Cast a food-grade silicone mould from the print and use the silicone for chocolate, ice or fondant. You get a perfect surface, flexibility and easy release.
