Caring for 3D Printed Items: Cleaning, Heat and Sunlight

A 3D printed object is plastic, so it is easy to assume it is indestructible. It is durable, but it has two specific enemies, heat and ultraviolet light, and a couple of cleaning habits that damage painted finishes. Here is how to keep a print looking like it did on the day it arrived.

Cleaning

For everyday dust, a soft dry cloth or a large makeup brush is all a print needs. Book nooks and figurines with fine detail respond well to a soft paintbrush or a gentle blast of compressed air, which reaches the corners a cloth cannot.

For grime, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap, wipe and dry. A few things to avoid:

• No dishwasher. The water temperature alone will deform PLA, and even PETG will come out cloudy and warped.
• No hot water. Keep it below 40 °C.
• No alcohol, acetone or solvent cleaners on painted or varnished items. They lift the paint. Isopropyl alcohol is fine on raw, unpainted PLA and PETG, but not on resin.
• No abrasive sponges. Layer lines catch the fibres and the surface goes dull.

Heat

This is the big one. The plastics used in 3D printing soften long before they melt, and a softened print sags under its own weight.

The car is where most damaged prints come from. A summer afternoon in Almaty turns a closed car into an oven, and a PLA figurine left on the seat can lean like a wilted flower by evening. If you are transporting a print, keep it in the cabin with you and out of direct sun. The same goes for hot mugs and dishes placed on a printed coaster or tray, and for lamps: an LED bulb is fine inside a printed shade, a halogen or incandescent bulb is not.

Sunlight

Ultraviolet light slowly changes plastic. In PLA, months of direct sun fade bright colours and make the material more brittle. Resin reacts faster: it yellows, and thin parts become fragile because sunlight continues the curing process that made the part hard in the first place.

• Keep display pieces out of a south-facing window. Indirect daylight is fine.
• A coat of UV-resistant matte varnish noticeably slows both fading and yellowing. We can apply it before shipping.

Water

Vases and planters are the items that raise this question most. A print is not automatically waterproof: water can seep between layers over time, and PLA absorbs a little moisture and weakens. A vase printed in spiral mode from PETG holds water well for cut flowers, but we still recommend emptying and drying it between uses rather than keeping it full for weeks. Painted and varnished items

Painted miniatures and book nooks are finished with acrylic paint under a protective varnish. That layer is tough but not infinite. Handle figures by the base rather than the details, dust with a soft brush, and never scrub. If a spot wears through after years of handling, a drop of matching paint fixes it; if you are not comfortable doing that, send it back to us for a touch-up.

Lamps and electronics

Lithophane lamps and lit nooks use low-voltage LEDs that run cool, so leaving them on for an evening is fine. Keep the USB socket and battery compartment dry, unplug before cleaning, and do not store the lamp anywhere damp.

• Heat: nothing above 50 °C for PLA and resin, no cars, no radiators.
• Sun: indirect light only, varnish for extra protection.
