Can You 3D Print Metal? What's Realistic for a Studio Order

"Can you print this in metal?" is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer has two halves. Yes, metal 3D printing is real and is used for rocket engines and dental implants. No, it is not something a small studio does on a desk. Here is what the industrial process involves, what Fantasy Lab 3D can realistically make that looks and feels like metal, and which route fits which project.

How real metal 3D printing works

Industrial metal printing, usually called DMLS or SLM (direct metal laser sintering / selective laser melting), spreads a thin layer of metal powder and fuses it with a laser, layer by layer, inside a chamber filled with inert gas. Titanium, stainless steel, aluminium and Inconel are all printable this way. The results are genuinely strong, dense parts.

The catch is everything around the machine: the printer itself costs as much as an apartment, the powder is explosive and toxic to breathe, parts must be cut off a steel plate with a saw and heat-treated in a furnace, and a single small bracket can cost as much as a good phone. It is the right tool for aerospace and medicine, and the wrong tool for a figurine or a door handle. If you truly need a solid steel part, CNC machining is often cheaper for one-offs.

What a studio can offer instead

Most people asking for "metal" actually want one of three things: the look of metal, the weight of metal, or the strength of metal. Each has a realistic solution.

Metallic-look filaments and paint

Silk filaments in gold, copper or silver have a shine that photographs beautifully, and a painted finish can go much further. Black primer, a metallic base coat, a dark wash in the recesses and a dry-brushed highlight on the edges turns a plastic helmet into something that reads as worn steel from a metre away. Metal-filled filament

Metal-filled filament is PLA mixed with a high proportion of real metal powder, typically bronze, copper, brass or stainless steel. Prints come out matte and slightly rough, but after sanding and a polishing wheel the metal particles on the surface shine like the real thing, and bronze versions can even be patinated to a green-brown antique finish. The part is also two to three times heavier than plain PLA, which is what makes a chess piece or a figurine feel expensive in the hand.

Limits to know about: the filament is abrasive, so it is slower to print and needs a hardened nozzle; it is more brittle than plain PLA; and thin details can snap. It is best for solid, chunky shapes: busts, medals, chess pieces, small statues, drawer pulls.

Resin master and casting

For jewellery, small badges or a genuinely metal keepsake, the professional route is a two-step one. We print the object in castable or high-detail resin, and a jeweller or small foundry uses it to make a mould and cast the piece in silver, brass or bronze using the lost-wax process. Which route for which project

  • Cosplay helmet, armour, sword: plastic print plus metallic paint. Light enough to wear, convincing under stage light.
  • Chess pieces, awards, busts: metal-filled filament, polished. Heavy and warm to the touch.
  • Ring, pendant, cufflinks, small emblem: resin master and casting in real metal.
  • Brackets, gears, hinges: usually a strong plastic is enough. Nylon and carbon-fibre-filled filaments carry surprising loads, and a plastic part that is 30 percent thicker often outperforms a thin metal one for the job.
  • A structural or high-temperature part that must be metal: we will say so honestly and point you to a machining shop or an industrial metal printing service.
