3D Printing for Jewellery Designers: Resin Masters and Casting
How jewellery designers use resin 3D printing for master models, lost-wax casting and try-on prototypes. Detail limits, resin types, workflow and how to order.

Hand-carving a wax ring takes a skilled bench jeweller a day; printing the same ring from a CAD file takes a couple of hours and can be repeated identically as many times as you like. Resin 3D printing has quietly become the standard first step in modern jewellery making. This guide explains what a printed master is, where it fits into casting, what detail you can expect and how to send a design to a studio.
Where 3D printing fits in a jeweller's workflow
Most jewellery is still cast in metal. What has changed is how the original model is made. The traditional route is to carve wax by hand, invest it in plaster, burn out the wax and pour metal into the cavity. The 3D printed route replaces the carving:
- The ring, pendant or setting is designed in CAD (Rhino, MatrixGold, Blender, ZBrush or similar).
- The file is printed in resin on an SLA or MSLA printer, which cures liquid photopolymer layer by layer with UV light.
- The printed piece becomes either a castable master (burned out like wax) or a master pattern for making a rubber or silicone mould.
- The rest of the process, casting, cleaning, stone setting and polishing, stays exactly as it was.
The result is faster iteration, perfect symmetry and the ability to reproduce a design months later without touching a wax file.
Three ways a printed part is used
Castable resin masters. Special "castable" resins are formulated to burn out of the investment cleanly with minimal ash, just like wax. The printed piece is sprued, invested, burned out and cast directly. Ideal for one-off custom pieces.
Master patterns for moulds. A standard or tough resin print is cleaned, sanded and used to make a vulcanised rubber or RTV silicone mould. Wax is then injected into that mould for production casting. This is how small collections are made: one printed master, dozens of wax copies.
Try-on and client prototypes. A quick print in standard resin lets a client see the ring at real size on their hand before any metal is bought. Changes cost nothing at this stage. Many designers print two or three variants and let the client choose.
How much detail can resin capture?
Consumer and prosumer resin printers typically print at 0.025 to 0.05 mm layer height with XY resolution in the region of 0.03 to 0.05 mm. In practice this means:
- Filigree, milgrain edges and small prong settings reproduce well.
- Engraved text down to roughly 0.3 mm stroke width is legible.
- Surfaces come out smooth enough that only light finishing is needed after casting.
- Very fine wires under about 0.4 mm can be fragile during cleaning and should be thickened slightly in the model.

What to send to the studio
- The model as STL or OBJ at 1:1 scale in millimetres. Check the ring size before exporting; resizing a finished model distorts the band's cross-section.
- Wall thickness of at least 0.6 to 0.8 mm for castable parts, more for larger surfaces.
- A note on which use the print is for: direct casting, mould master or prototype. This determines the resin and the support strategy.
- Orientation preferences if you have them; otherwise the studio orients the piece to keep supports off polished faces.
If you have a sketch but no file, modelling is possible too, though for jewellery a CAD-experienced designer on your side gives the best result.
