Can 3D Printed Vases Hold Water? Waterproofing Explained
Yes, a 3D printed vase can hold water, but only if it is printed and sealed correctly. Learn why prints leak, which materials work and how we make them watertight.

You have seen a beautiful spiral vase on our page and want fresh tulips in it, not silk ones. Fair question: will it leak? A 3D printed vase can absolutely hold water, but only if the studio prints it with that intention. Here is why some prints leak, how we make ours watertight and what to ask for when you order.
Why a 3D print can leak in the first place
FDM printing builds an object from hundreds of thin plastic layers, each fused to the one below. Under a microscope those layers look like a stack of tiny sausages pressed together. Where two sausages meet there can be microscopic gaps, and water is very good at finding them. A leak in a printed vase almost never comes from a crack; it comes from thousands of pinholes between layers and between the side-by-side lines of a wall.
Three things make those gaps worse:
- Thin walls. A single 0.4 mm line of plastic has no backup if it has a flaw.
- Under-extrusion. If the printer pushes slightly too little plastic, lines do not fully touch.
- Wrong material. Some plastics fuse more reliably than others.
The good news is that every one of these is controllable on the studio side.

PETG is our default for anything that will hold water for real. It is slightly glossy, tough, unbothered by moisture and bonds between layers better than PLA. If you love a particular colour that only exists in PLA, we can still make it work with a sealant, described below.
Vase mode: beautiful, and surprisingly watertight
Many of our vases, including the Aria series, are printed in "vase mode" (also called spiral mode). Instead of printing separate rings layer by layer, the nozzle rises in one continuous spiral, producing a wall that is a single unbroken line from bottom to top. There is no seam where each layer starts and stops, which removes the most common leak path. We explain why this looks so good in our post on spiral vase printing.
To make a vase-mode print watertight we do three things:
- Use a wider nozzle or a deliberately thicker single wall, typically 0.8 to 1.2 mm.
- Slightly over-extrude, so neighbouring rings are squeezed firmly together.
- Print a solid base of several layers, since the floor is where most leaks start.
Done this way, a PETG vase-mode print holds water for years without any coating at all.
Sealing prints that need extra insurance
For vases with complex geometry, prints in PLA or anything that must be leak-proof beyond doubt, we add a sealant to the inside:
- Water-based clear varnish or polyurethane: brushed inside, two coats, invisible from outside.
- Food-safe epoxy resin: poured in and swirled to coat every surface, then cured. This is the strongest option and gives a glassy interior.
- Silicone spray or wax: quick and cheap, but needs reapplying, so we rarely recommend it.
Ask for a "sealed interior" when you order and we will pick the right method for the shape. If the vessel is for drinks or food rather than flowers, read our note on whether PLA is food safe first, because that is a separate question from waterproofing.
What about planters and outdoor use?
Planters do not need to be watertight; they usually need the opposite, a drainage hole. But the plastic still sits in damp soil for months. PETG or ASA handle that without swelling or going soft, and we print planters with thicker walls and a proper bottom. How to care for a printed vase
- Fill with room-temperature water. Hot water above about 60 °C will soften PLA and deform the vase.
- Change the water every few days as you would with any vase.
- Rinse with mild soap; skip the dishwasher.
- Dry the base before putting it back on a wooden surface.
