I Have an Idea but No 3D Model. Now What?

Most people who want something 3D printed do not have a 3D file. They have a picture in their head, a sketch on a napkin, a photo from Pinterest or a broken plastic part in a drawer. That is a perfectly good starting point. This guide explains what happens between "I have an idea" and "here is your printed object", and what you can do to make it faster and cheaper.

Three routes from idea to file

Depending on what you have, there are three ways to get a printable model:

Route one is cheapest. There are millions of free and paid models online, and for a popular subject someone has probably already made a good one. Read where to find 3D models to print before commissioning anything, because a ready model can save you the whole design step.

What to send to a modeller

The quality of a custom model depends almost entirely on the brief. The more concrete your material, the fewer revisions and the lower the cost. Useful things to send:

  • Reference photos. Several angles if it is an existing object. Similar products if it is a new one. Screenshots from games or films for characters.
  • A sketch, even a rough one. Proportions and placement of features matter more than drawing skill.
  • Dimensions. Overall height, width and depth at minimum. For a part that must fit something, the exact dimensions of the mating object. Our guide on how to measure for a custom part shows what to measure and how.
  • Function. Will it hold weight? Clip onto something? Contain liquid? Be handled daily? This shapes wall thickness and material.
  • Style. Realistic or stylised, smooth or textured, minimal or ornate. Two or three images you like communicate style faster than paragraphs.
  • Text or logos as vector files (SVG, AI, PDF) if they will be embossed or cut into the model.

Do not worry about knowing 3D terminology. "I want it to look like this photo but with my dog's face and about 12 cm tall" is a complete brief.

How the modelling process works

At Fantasy Lab 3D a custom modelling job usually goes like this:

  1. Discussion. We ask clarifying questions and confirm what is possible at the size you want. Some details are too fine for FDM and need resin, and some shapes need to be split into parts.
  2. Quote. Modelling is priced by complexity and estimated hours. A simple mechanical bracket is fast. A detailed sculpted character with clothing and a face is a multi-day job. Printing is quoted separately, so you see both numbers.
  3. Draft model. You receive renders or screenshots of the model from several angles, sometimes with a scale reference.
  4. Revisions. You point out what to change. One or two rounds are normal and included; more extensive redesigns are discussed.
  5. Print-ready file. Once approved, the model is checked for wall thickness, overhangs and printability, then printed.

The whole cycle for a simple object can fit into a few days. For a complex figure, allow a couple of weeks including printing and finishing.

Copying a real object

If you need a replica or a replacement of something physical, you have two options. For simple geometric parts (a knob, a bracket, a lid), careful measurement with callipers and a few photos is enough for a designer to rebuild it precisely. For organic or complex shapes (a sculpture, a face, a curved trim piece), 3D scanning captures the form directly and the model is cleaned up afterwards. What about AI model generators?

Text-to-3D tools have improved and can produce a rough shape from a sentence. They are useful for brainstorming and for simple organic objects, but the output often has messy geometry, wrong proportions and no attention to printability. Treat them as a sketching tool: a good starting point that a designer then rebuilds properly. Fantasy Lab 3D can take an AI-generated draft and turn it into something that prints cleanly.

Who owns the model?

When a studio models something to your brief, agree upfront on what you receive. Typically you get the printed object and can request the file as well, so you can reprint it later or elsewhere. If the design is based on a copyrighted character or a branded product, that affects what can be sold, and we will be honest about it before starting.
