Anime Figurines in 3D Print: A Gift Guide for Otaku Friends

Official anime figures are expensive, sell out in pre-order and cover only the most popular characters. A 3D printed figurine solves all three problems: it can be any character in any pose, at the size you choose, with a finish that ranges from clean grey resin to a fully painted display piece. This guide explains what to ask for so the gift lands.

Why print instead of buy

• Characters without official merch. Side characters, older series, manga-only designs and original characters from a friend's own art all exist as printable models or can be sculpted.
• Size on demand. The same file can print at 10 cm for a desk or 30 cm for a shelf centrepiece.
• Pose and variant. Battle pose, casual outfit, a specific season's design. Many sculptors release several versions.
• One-off, not a factory run. The figure your friend receives is made for them, and it can carry their name or a favourite quote on the base.

Resin or FDM for anime figures

This is the most important decision. FDM printers extrude melted plastic in layers; resin (SLA/MSLA) printers cure liquid photopolymer with UV light, layer by layer, at far finer resolution.

For faces, hair strands, fingers and flowing clothes, resin wins clearly. Layer lines on resin are around 0.03 to 0.05 mm and disappear after priming. FDM is a good choice for larger stylised figures, chibi characters with simple shapes and pieces that will be handled a lot, because PLA is less brittle than standard resin. Scale and size, explained

Anime figure collectors talk in scales. Here is what they mean in real height for a character of average adult height.

Larger figures are printed in several parts and assembled with pins and glue, with seams filled before painting.

Finish options

The finish changes the gift more than anything else, and it also changes the price.

1. Raw print. Grey or coloured resin, supports removed, cured and cleaned. Fine for someone who paints figures themselves.
2. Primed. Sanded and sprayed with a uniform primer. Looks like a garage kit, ready for paint.
3. Basic paint. Flat colours matched to the character, sealed with varnish.
4. Display paint. Shading, highlights, eye decals or hand-painted eyes, gloss on hair and metal. This is the level people photograph.

Gift ideas beyond the standing figure

• Busts. Head and shoulders at a large scale show off faces and hair without needing a big shelf.
• Chibi sets. A whole cast in chibi form, printed in multi-colour FDM, no painting needed.
• Props. A 1:1 katana hilt, a mask, a signature accessory as a wall piece.
• Lithophane panel. A favourite frame from the show, printed as a lithophane that lights up from behind.
• Phone stand or bookends shaped like the character's emblem.

A word on copyright

Most anime figurine models are fan sculpts sold for personal printing. Printing a single copy for a friend is normal practice, but selling copies or using the character commercially is not. We explain where the lines are in Can I order a print of a copyrighted character?.

How to order

Send the character name, a reference image or a link to a model you have found, the height you want and the finish level.
