3D Printed Lamps and Lampshades: Light Through Layers

Thin plastic lets light through. That single fact makes lamps one of the best things you can 3D print: a wall of 1 mm PLA glows softly, a wall of 3 mm blocks light, and everything in between can be sculpted into gradients, patterns and pictures. Here is what a printed lamp can look like, which materials and bulbs work safely, and how Fantasy Lab 3D makes them.

Types of 3D printed lamps

  • Moon lamps and lithophanes. A sphere whose wall thickness varies to reproduce a real lunar surface (or your photo). Thin areas glow bright, thick areas stay dark. Our moon lamp in the photo is a classic example. We explain the method in how a 3D printed moon lamp works.
  • Spiral and vase-mode shades. Printed as one continuous single wall, these shades have no seams and beautiful ribbed textures. The technique is the same one used for our spiral-mode vases.
  • Geometric pendants. Polyhedra, Voronoi shells, low-poly shapes hanging from a cord. Light escapes through the openings and paints patterns on the ceiling.
  • Table and desk lamps. A printed shade on a printed or bought base, with a switch and a warm LED.
  • Night lights. Small figures or shapes with a low-power LED inside: a cat, a mountain range, a name.
  • Wall sconces. Half-shells mounted on the wall for indirect light.

Why layers make the light look so good

A translucent 3D print does not glow evenly: each layer line diffuses light slightly, so the surface has a soft grain, like paper or frosted glass. Vertical ribs from spiral printing create gentle stripes. Lithophanes go further, turning thickness into a full grayscale image. Those effects are hard to get with any other manufacturing method, which is why printed lamps look unique rather than "homemade".

White and natural PLA give the cleanest glow. Coloured translucent filaments (amber, blue, green) tint the light. Opaque filaments turn a shade into a pure pattern-caster, where only the cutouts let light through.

Materials and heat: the safety part

The most common question about printed lamps is heat. Standard PLA softens at around 55–60 °C. That is well above room temperature but well below the surface temperature of an old incandescent or halogen bulb. The rule is simple:

All lamps we make are designed for LED sources. For a lamp that sits near a heat source or in direct summer sun, we can print in PETG, which tolerates higher temperatures. Electrical parts (sockets, cords, USB LED modules) are standard certified components; the printed part is only the shade, base or housing. Size, shape and custom designs

Lamp shades are surprisingly forgiving in size. A pendant can be 15 cm or 40 cm across; large shades are printed in sections and joined with hidden tabs. Wall thickness is the main design tool:

  • 0.8–1.2 mm: bright glow, delicate look, good for small night lights.
  • 1.6–2.4 mm: even, softer glow, better for larger pendants.
  • Variable thickness: lithophanes and gradient effects.

We can start from a design you found, adapt an existing pattern to your bulb and fitting, or model a lamp from scratch: a mountain silhouette from your hometown, a family photo lithophane, a Death Star, a lamp shaped like your logo.

Fitting and assembly

Every shade is printed with the correct opening for a standard lamp holder (E27 or E14) or with a channel for an LED strip. For pendant lamps, the shade slips over a standard cord set; for table lamps we supply a base with a USB or plug-in LED module. Cable holes, switch cutouts and a screw-on ring are designed in, so no drilling is needed at home.

Delivery: we pack lamps in rigid boxes with foam, deliver across Kazakhstan, and ship internationally on request. The price depends on size, material and finish, and on whether you want the shade only or a complete lamp with electronics.
