Which LEDs suit a book nook, a moon lamp or a display base, how to power and hide them, what colour temperature to pick and what is safe inside a plastic print.

Adding LED Lighting to 3D Prints: Book Nooks, Lamps and Displays

A book nook with warm light spilling from its windows sells itself. The same nook unlit is a nice shelf ornament. Light is the cheapest upgrade a 3D print can get, and it is almost always worth it. Here is which LEDs we use for which project, how to power them, how to hide them and what is actually safe inside a plastic model.

For most decorative prints, a short 5 V USB strip or a string of fairy lights does the job. Both run cool, cost little and plug into a charger you already own.

Warm or cool light, and why it matters

Colour temperature changes the mood of a piece more than brightness does.

  • 2700 to 3000 K (warm white): candles, fireplaces, hobbit holes, taverns, anything cosy. This is what we fit in Lord of the Rings nooks.
  • 4000 K (neutral): lithophane portraits, where accurate skin tones matter.
  • 6000 K and above (cool white): sci-fi corridors, ice caves, Warhammer machinery.
  • RGB: fun for a gaming desk, tiring for a bookshelf. Use it where the colour change is the point.

For a lithophane, a photo printed as a relief that only reveals itself when lit, we prefer warm or neutral white and a diffuse source. Our post on how a moon lamp works explains why the light source matters as much as the print.

Diffusion: making the light look soft

A bare LED is a bright dot with hard shadows. A few tricks turn it into a glow.

  • Print the window panes or lamp body in white or natural PLA at one to two walls (0.8 to 1.6 mm). The plastic itself becomes the diffuser.
  • Keep some distance. An LED 20 mm behind a panel spreads evenly; one pressed against it shows as a hot spot.
  • Point the LED at a wall, not at the viewer. Bounced light is softer.
  • Add a baffle. A small printed lip in front of a strip hides the individual diodes.

In a book nook, the strip usually sits under the roof, aimed downward, so the light comes through the windows and doorways while the source stays hidden.

Design the wiring in from the start

Light fitted as an afterthought means a visible cable and a battery box taped to the back. Fitted at the modelling stage it becomes invisible. We add:

  • channels for wires inside walls and floors,
  • pockets for LEDs behind windows and lamp posts,
  • a cut-out for a USB socket or a battery compartment with a sliding lid,
  • a recess for the switch on the back or underside.

If you want a custom model lit, mention it when you order, and we will build these features in rather than carve them out later. The same applies to the lamps and lampshades we print.

Heat and safety

LEDs at 5 V or 12 V produce very little heat and are safe inside PLA. A few limits keep it that way.

  • Never put mains voltage (220 V) inside a plastic print. Use a USB adapter or batteries only.
  • Do not seal a long, dense 12 V strip in a closed PLA box. It warms up, and PLA starts to soften around 60 °C. Ventilate or use a shorter USB strip.
  • Never fit an incandescent bulb into a lithophane lamp. LED only.
  • Keep battery boxes accessible, so they can be replaced without dismantling the model.

Switches and control

An inline switch on the USB cable is the simplest option. Touch sensors, remote controls and dimmers are cheap add-ons for lamps. For a book nook that lives on a shelf, we usually recommend a USB cable with an inline switch: no batteries to run flat, and it turns on with one tap.
