Layer Height Explained: 0.1 mm vs 0.2 mm and Why It Matters for Price
Layer height decides how smooth a 3D print looks and how long it takes. See 0.1 mm vs 0.2 mm vs 0.3 mm compared, with real effects on detail, time and cost.

When a studio asks "what layer height do you want?", it is really asking how smooth the print should look and how much time you are willing to pay for. Layer height is the single setting with the biggest effect on both. This post explains what the numbers mean, shows where each one is the right choice, and untangles why a finer print costs more.
What layer height actually is
An FDM printer builds an object from stacked ribbons of melted plastic. Layer height is the thickness of each ribbon. At 0.2 mm, a 10 cm tall figurine is made of 500 layers. At 0.1 mm, the same figurine needs 1,000 layers, and the printer must trace every outline twice as many times.
Thinner layers mean:
- Smoother curved and sloped surfaces, because each "step" between layers is smaller.
- Finer detail in the vertical direction (small text, facial features, chainmail).
- Roughly double the print time for every halving of layer height.
Layer height does not change detail in the horizontal plane; that is governed by nozzle size, typically 0.4 mm. A 0.05 mm layer print will not make a 0.2 mm wide sword edge sharper.

The strange values (0.12, 0.16) are not typos. Layer heights that are multiples of the printer's mechanical step size print more consistently, so studios often prefer them to round numbers.
Where 0.2 mm is the smart default
For most functional and decorative objects, 0.2 mm is the sweet spot. Vases in spiral mode, desk organisers, phone stands, storage boxes and architectural massing models look clean, print in reasonable time and keep the quote friendly. On flat vertical walls and gentle curves, the difference between 0.2 mm and 0.12 mm is genuinely hard to spot at arm's length.
It is also the right choice when the piece will be sanded and painted. Post-processing erases layer lines anyway, so paying for fine layers underneath the paint is wasted money. Our guide to removing layer lines covers that route.
When to pay for 0.1 mm
Finer layers earn their cost on:
- Shallow slopes and domes. A sphere, a helmet crown or a curved shoulder pad shows stair-stepping most, and thin layers shrink those steps. The 1:1 Arthas helmet at Fantasy Lab 3D was printed at fine layers for exactly this reason.
- Small figurines and busts. Facial features are vertical detail; at 0.2 mm a nose is 3 layers, at 0.1 mm it is 6.
- Pieces displayed unpainted. Marble and silk filaments look better when the surface is smooth because there is no paint to hide the texture.
- Text and logos on top surfaces. Thin layers make raised lettering crisper.

Why finer layers cost more
The material used is nearly identical regardless of layer height. What changes is machine time. A print that takes 8 hours at 0.2 mm takes around 16 hours at 0.1 mm, and the printer is busy that whole time. Studios price partly by machine hours because a printer occupied by one job cannot take another. Longer prints also carry a higher risk of a mid-print failure, which the studio absorbs.

- "It goes on a shelf, unpainted, and people will pick it up." We will suggest 0.12 or 0.1 mm.
