Gifts for Book Lovers: Book Nooks, Bookends and Reading Lamps

A reader's shelf is the most personal thing in the room, which is why gifting a book is risky: they may already have it. Gifting something that lives on the shelf next to the books is a safer bet, and 3D printing has quietly become the best source of those objects. Here is what a small studio can make for the reader in your life, from the showpiece down to the stocking filler.

The book nook: a tiny world between the books

A book nook is a diorama the size of a thick hardback. It slides in between two books and, from the front, shows a doorway, an alley or a corridor that seems to go deep into the shelf. Most have a warm LED inside so the scene glows in the evening.

Themes that readers love:

• A wizard's study or an old library with tiny shelves, a ladder and a lit desk.
• A fantasy alley in the style of a wizarding shopping street.
• Bag End with the round green door, or the mines of Moria, for Tolkien readers.
• A cosy bookshop front with a striped awning and a cat in the window.

Bookends with a point of view

Bookends are the most underrated gift on this list. They are used every day, they are visible, and there is no "wrong" number to own.

• Sculptural pairs: two halves of a dragon, a fox curled around each end, a hand pushing the books upright.
• Architectural: a castle gatehouse, a Gothic arch, a slice of a city skyline.
• Typographic: a large letter, initials or the word READ in a bold font.
• Weighted: hollow prints can be filled with sand or plaster so they hold a full row of hardbacks without sliding.

Printed in marble filament they look like carved stone; in matte black they look like cast iron. Neither needs painting.

Reading lamps and lithophanes

A lithophane is a thin panel whose thickness varies so that, when light shines through it, a photo appears. A 3D printer can turn any picture into one.

• A moon lamp with the real lunar surface printed as a lithophane, on a wooden or printed stand. It gives soft, low light that is perfect for reading before sleep.
• A photo lithophane night light with a picture of their favourite bookshop, a beloved cover or a family photo.
• A clip-on book light housing designed around a specific LED module so the light hits the page and not the eyes.

FDM is the standard process where a printer lays down melted plastic in layers; resin printing cures a liquid photopolymer with UV light and gives finer detail. PLA is the plant-based plastic most decorative prints use.

Personalising the gift

The reason to order from a studio rather than buy off a shelf is that details can be changed. A bookend can carry a name or a date. A nook can have a tiny sign with the reader's own surname over the shop door. A lithophane can be made from a photo you send.
