Custom Branded Merch with 3D Printing: Logos, Awards and Trophies

Pens and tote bags get lost in a drawer. A 3D printed piece with your logo built into its shape gets kept on a desk, photographed and asked about. This post covers which merch items print well, how a flat logo becomes a three-dimensional object, and how to order a run of 20 to 500 pieces without ordering a warehouse of leftovers.

Why 3D printed merch stands out

Traditional promotional products are mass-produced blanks with a logo printed on top. 3D printing works the other way round: the logo, the mascot or the product itself becomes the object. That changes how it is perceived.

• No minimums. You can order 25 pieces for a small team event or a few hundred for a conference. There is no mould to pay off, so small runs are not penalised. More on this in small-batch manufacturing with 3D printing.
• Every piece can differ. Names, job titles, event dates or serial numbers cost nothing extra to change between units.
• The shape is the brand. A logo extruded into a stand, a mascot as a figurine, a product miniature as a keychain. Nobody else has that item.
• Fast turnaround. No tooling means a batch can start within days of approving the design.

Turning a logo into a 3D object

A logo is usually a flat vector file (SVG, AI, PDF). To print it, the studio converts it into a solid shape. There are three common approaches:

1. Extrusion. The logo outline is raised or recessed by 1 to 3 mm on a base. This is the simplest and works for almost any mark.
2. Two-colour inlay. The base prints in one colour and the logo in another, either by swapping filament at a given layer or on a multi-material printer. Crisp, durable, no paint to chip. See multi-colour 3D printing.
3. Full sculpt. For mascots and characters, a 3D artist models the figure from your reference images. This takes longer but produces the piece people actually keep.

A few design notes: very thin lines (under about 0.8 mm) and tiny text (under about 4 mm tall) blur on FDM printers, so simplified versions of complex logos print better. Resin handles finer detail if the item is small.

Materials and finishes

For most branded pieces, PLA in your brand colour is the practical choice: it prints accurately, comes in a wide range of colours and is fine for indoor use. PETG is better for items that will be handled a lot or left in a car. Special filaments add a premium feel: marble, silk, matte or wood-fill can make a simple stand look like a designed object. If exact colour matching to a brand guideline matters, the item can be primed and painted after printing, or a neutral print can carry a printed vinyl or resin logo insert.

How to order a branded run

1. Send your logo as a vector (SVG, AI, EPS or PDF) plus brand colour references. A PNG works for simple shapes.
2. Describe the item or pick from the list above, with approximate size and quantity.
3. Approve a render or sample. For runs above a few dozen pieces, one sample is printed first so you can hold it, check the colour and sign off.
4. Batch production. Units are printed in sets, checked for consistency and packed.

Lead time scales with quantity and finishing. Small keychains print quickly in batches; painted trophies take longer. Give the studio your event date early and it can plan around it. Pricing depends on size, material, quantity and finish, so ask for a quote with your target number.
