3D Printed Signage and Letters for Shops and Offices

A vinyl sticker on the door says "we exist". Raised letters on the wall say "we mean it". Dimensional signage used to require a sign shop, a metal or acrylic workshop and a serious budget; 3D printing brings the same effect within reach of a single café, a dental clinic or a startup office. Here is what can be printed, how big it can go and what to think about before ordering.

What counts as 3D printed signage

Almost anything flat with a bit of depth:

• Dimensional letters for reception walls and shopfronts, from 3 cm to well over 50 cm tall.
• Logo plaques that reproduce your mark exactly, including complex curves that are painful to cut from acrylic.
• Door and room signs for offices, clinics and coworking spaces, with room numbers and names in relief.
• Backlit signs with a hollow body and an LED strip inside, giving a soft halo on the wall behind.
• Menu boards, price tags and shelf talkers for shops and cafés that need to match the brand instead of a generic holder.
• Directional and wayfinding signs, including tactile signs with raised text and Braille.

The common thread is depth. A printed letter is a solid object, so it casts a shadow, catches side light and reads as a designed element rather than a print-out.

Materials and finishes

Interior signage is usually printed in PLA or PETG. PLA gives the sharpest corners and the widest colour range; PETG is tougher and slightly glossier, which suits letters that will be handled or cleaned. For signs that face the sun or hang outdoors, ASA is the material of choice because it resists UV and does not go brittle. We explain the trade-offs in which 3D prints can live outdoors.

How big can a sign be?

Individual letters print as single pieces up to the size of the printer bed. Anything larger is split into segments with hidden joints, glued, filled and painted so the seam disappears. A two-metre wall logo is therefore a set of panels rather than one print, and the joints are planned so they fall on straight edges of the letters.

Letters are printed hollow with an internal lattice, which keeps them light. A 30 cm letter typically weighs a few hundred grams and mounts with double-sided tape, small screws or standoff pins. Large signs get a flat back with mounting holes and a paper drilling template.

Backlighting and LEDs

Backlit letters are the most requested style. The letter body is printed as a shell with an open back; an LED strip sits inside and light spills onto the wall for a halo effect, or a translucent face is printed so the letter itself glows. A low-voltage LED strip runs from a small adapter and stays cool, so PLA or PETG is safe to use indoors. If you want the full picture, read adding LED lighting to 3D prints.

Signage for specific businesses

• Offices and coworkings: meeting room names, desk numbers, motivational typography, a big reception logo.
• Retail: shelf brand blocks, product category letters, seasonal window props.
• Events: temporary signs, hashtag letters for photo zones, sponsor logos on stands.

What to send when ordering

• Your logo as a vector file (SVG, PDF, AI or EPS). A high-resolution PNG can work for simple shapes.
• The overall width or height you want, and the letter depth (15 to 30 mm is typical).
• Colours, preferably as codes from your brand guide.
• Where it will hang: interior, sunlit window or fully outdoors.
• Whether you want backlighting and whether there is a power socket nearby.
