3D Printed Planters: Geometric Pots for Succulents and Herbs

A succulent in a plain plastic pot is a plant. The same succulent in a faceted, low-poly planter in matte white is a piece of décor. 3D printing makes it easy to produce pots in shapes that ceramics cannot manage and in exactly the size your windowsill has left. Here is what works, what to watch out for with water and sunlight, and how Fantasy Lab 3D prints planters that look good and keep plants alive.

Why 3D printed planters look different

Ceramic pots are thrown or cast, so their shapes are limited to what releases cleanly from a mould. A printer builds an object layer by layer with no mould at all, which opens up geometry that would otherwise be impossible or very expensive:

  • Faceted low-poly forms that catch light on every angle
  • Twisted and spiral bodies, printed in one continuous line
  • Voronoi and lattice shells with an inner cup hidden inside
  • Heads, animals, skulls, geometric planets and other character pots
  • Self-watering designs with a hidden reservoir and wick
  • Wall-mounted, hanging and corner-fitting shapes for awkward spaces

Printers handle all of these comfortably, and larger sizes are possible by printing in sections. If you have a specific plant, tell us its current pot size and we will scale the planter with a little room to grow.

Drainage: the part people forget

Succulents and herbs die from wet roots far more often than from thirst. A planter needs one of three things:

  1. Drainage holes in the base plus a matching saucer, both of which can be printed as part of the set.
  2. A hidden inner cup that lifts out for watering, with the decorative shell staying dry.
  3. A self-watering reservoir with a wick, for herbs that like consistent moisture.

We print drainage holes and saucers by default unless you ask for a sealed design (for example, a cachepot that will hold a nursery pot).

Materials and water

Standard PLA is fine for planters that sit indoors and are watered normally. PLA is slightly moisture-permeable over long periods, so for a pot that will hold water directly against the plastic we either print thicker walls, seal the inside with a food-safe or aquarium-safe coating, or recommend PETG, which is more water resistant and tolerates warm rooms. For a balcony or a garden wall, sunlight is the bigger problem. PLA softens on a hot windowsill in direct summer sun and slowly fades under UV. PETG or ASA handles outdoor life much better, as explained in can 3D prints live outdoors. Tell us where the planter will live and we will pick the material accordingly.

Colours and finishes

Planters are one of the few objects where almost any filament looks good:

  • Matte white, sand, terracotta and sage for a Scandinavian or boho look
  • Marble filament for a stone-like pot that hides layer lines
  • Silk gold or copper for a metallic accent on a dark shelf
  • Wood-fill for a warm, textured cabin feel
  • Two-colour prints with a contrasting rim or inner cup

Since a planter's surface is mostly gentle curves, layer lines are subtle and rarely need sanding. If you want a glossy or painted finish, we can prime and spray it.

Sets and gifts

Planters print quickly and cheaply in multiples, which makes them a popular gift and a good match for shops, cafés and offices. A set of three matching geometric pots in graduated sizes, a row of six mini planters for a kitchen herb shelf, or a dozen branded pots with a logo on the rim are all typical orders.
