3D Printing Trends in 2026: What's Changing for Customers
Multi-colour printers, faster machines, AI-generated models and better materials: the 3D printing trends of 2026 explained from the customer's side of the counter.

3D printing changes fast, and most articles about it are written for people who own printers. This one is for people who order prints. Here are the shifts in 2026 that actually change what you can get, how quickly and what it looks like when it arrives.
Multi-colour printing is now normal
A few years ago, a two-colour print meant either painting or a lot of fiddly filament swaps by hand. Today's consumer printers come with automatic filament changers that switch between four, eight or more spools during a single print. The practical result for you:
- A chess set with white pieces and a black inlay printed in one go.
- Logos, text and details in contrasting colours with no painting.
- Lithophanes and signs with coloured backings.

Printers got a lot faster
The current generation of FDM machines prints two to four times faster than printers from 2020 without losing quality, thanks to stiffer frames and smarter motion control. A book nook that once tied up a printer for two days can now be finished in a day. Resin printers have also moved to larger, higher-resolution screens, so a batch of miniatures prints at 20-micron detail in a couple of hours.

AI-generated 3D models are here, with caveats
You can now type "a small dragon curled around a candle holder" into an image-to-3D tool and get a printable-looking mesh in minutes. This is the most hyped trend of the year, and it is genuinely useful for rough shapes, organic sculptures and concept models.
What it is not good at yet: precise dimensions, thin walls that print reliably, moving parts and anything that must fit another object. Special-effect filaments in particular have matured. Marble, silk, glow-in-the-dark and dual-colour spools are now consistent enough that we use them for display pieces without worrying about batch variation.
Better surfaces straight off the printer
Two things have improved how prints look before any finishing: smaller nozzles combined with faster machines make 0.1 mm layers affordable, and slicer software now varies the layer height automatically, using fine layers on curved surfaces and thicker ones on vertical walls. Matte filaments hide the rest. The net effect is that a lot of decorative prints no longer need sanding or painting to look good on a shelf.
Personalisation as the default
The most visible cultural shift is that customers no longer ask "can you print this model?" but "can you make this model with my name, my cat, my company logo?" Because there are no moulds or tooling in 3D printing, a one-off is no more expensive per piece than a standard item. Custom lithophanes from a phone photo, name lamps and personalised board game inserts are now everyday orders rather than special projects.
Small studios instead of big marketplaces
More people are choosing a local studio over a faceless marketplace, for a simple reason: you can talk to the person printing your model. Questions about fit, colour and material get answered before printing rather than after a disappointing delivery.
